Me: Now that you’re pregnant, you should stop smoking.
Patient: I’ve been smoking for 12 years, and I don’t plan on stopping now.
Me: (Pause) Wait, you’ve been smoking since 2nd grade?

Nice. Few weeks ago I had a 6wk preg lower abd pain who admitted after the transvag ultrasound she really just “wanted to get the baby checked out, because I’ve been smoking and drinking all this time. Do you think the baby will be okay?”
Sigh.

I’ve got a friend who started smoking in 5th grade… I can’t imagine she’s the youngest smoker in the world (though 10 years old is pretty damn young to be smoking, I know.)

When you put that kind of time into your life’s work, you hate to give it up once you’ve mastered it.

Hey those times tables can be a handful. Kid’s gotta find some way to take the edge off…
September 3, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Lots of kids smoke in countries where it’s not illegal.

In the summer between 5th and 6th grade I spent some time with my cousin who is only 6 weeks older than I am. He was a pack/day smoker at that time.

That is hot. I bet she looks awesome in her 40’s.
September 4, 2009 at 8:52 pm
I’m sure she looks like a classy alligator purse, and toothless, like the rest of her 8th grade (5th time through it) class.
September 5, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Wow. Talk about a piece of work. By the way I love your blog!

Smokers are a girls best friend in out patient surgery. I had a Lap Chole meet all discharge criteria in 30 minutes. The cigarette and lighter were actually in her hand as she sat down in the wheelchair for her ride to the front door,so desperate was she to light up.

Not so unusual here, either, sadly. Bet she has a great “cat’s butt” mouth.
I remember my mother deciding to start smoking cause her boyfriend smoked. She was 37. She didn’t continue because her two teen daughters laughed at her and threatened to start smoking too.

New post please!!!!
I need it for my “one day I’ll experience that” motivation during med school.

I am hoping that this blogger has not needed the services of one of his colleagues.

I have become addicted to this blog and now I am a cold turkey.
Why is our witty, perceptive host absent?
a) On the vacation of a lifetime, perhaps at the French Riviera or Monaco?
b) Nothing higher than 5 out of ten has crossed his threshold since 9/2/09?
c) He is madly in love, perhaps with another emergency room doctor?
Starting tomorrow if no reports from the halls of despair, I will start counting days missing.
September 25, 2009 at 6:12 am
I am starting my official countback.
Dr. Trismus, come back! Tell us about ER horrors!
Day 1 of missing in action.
September 27, 2009 at 10:53 am
It is now day 3 of Dr. T missing in action.
Can this wonderful blog be revived?
September 28, 2009 at 7:36 am
Day 4 of Dr. T. missing in action.
Is it too soon to yell “Stat! Stat!”?
Speaking of which…

In the meantime, I will go over and visit Dr. Grumpy for my medical blog fix.
September 28, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I’m not counting so much as weeping uncontrollably whilst curled up in a little fetal-position ball. TEN/TEN! Come baaaack!
September 29, 2009 at 9:46 am
Day 5 of Dr. T missing.
Dr. T is now responsible for Nurse K going into hysterics.
September 30, 2009 at 7:06 am
Day 6 of Dr. T missing.
September 30, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Where is he? ah what if he never comes back?! This is my favorite ER blog. oh no what if he ends up like Hallway Four?!
September 30, 2009 at 10:01 pm
I’ve been lurking for a while, this is the first time I’ve commented. I really like the way you write and I hope you don’t mind that I’ve linked to your blog. I would love it if you would check out mine
Here is the url http://lindylu44.wordpress.com/ I just started it and would love a link back only if you think it’s worthy

Day 7 of Dr. T. missing. I am beginning to seriously worry about him.
October 1, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Not only is 10/10 missing, but Nurse K seems awol as well.
Coincidence???
This is how rumors are started. My two favorite blogs are not being updated. What’s up wid dat?
October 2, 2009 at 9:09 am
Are Dr. T. and Nurse K an item?
How does one read Nurse K’s blog? Does one have to be a health care worker instead of a layman?
Day 8 of Dr. T missing. Somebody else will have to keep track of Nurse K.
October 2, 2009 at 5:05 pm
I’m around. I had to quit my blog to look for 10/10 full-time…
October 2, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I think it is time we start searching for obituaries of Texan ER docs.
October 10, 2009 at 12:48 am
Dear Nurse K,
Ok, so you’re not blogging at the moment. Why not open the blog so we can at least read the archives? I’m jonesin’ over here.
October 17, 2009 at 1:34 am
I have tried to quit for several years- over 15 in fact! I finally found something that helped me. I quit a little over 2 years ago and have not looked back. I could not have done it without the help of the stop smoking expert. It is definitely worth checking out. You can find it at http://tinyurl.com/nomoresmokes. I’m telling you, after I quit, my lungs thanked me and I have felt better than ever before… Not to mention I can actually taste my food! Seriously, check it out!
