A mother once presented to the ER with her baby, worried because she had pulled an earwig from her ear. Her fears were that there were more bugs in her ears and asked "If the bugs have gotten into her brain and are eating it" because the baby was rather fussy that day.

It at first seemed almost comical until the nurse standing next to me turned around and asked the ER doc "if bugs can get to your brain from your ears." So much for fundamental anatomy classes.

We did evaluate the baby but all mom needed was a little reassurance.

Thanks for the tips. Perhaps while dealing with the new grads I'll recommend your list :)

If it drives you crazy enough then get your MPH

I've always been curious about this--why do doctors get an MPH degree if they are clinicians? How does it help them, or is it a stepping stone to another job or what?

It's always interesting wading through complaints of chest pain, itchy feet, and sore throats to find out why people actually came to the ED.

Med student/resident pet peeve:

If a patient is a frequent flyer, don't disregard the fact that this problem has been worked up 20 times in the previous two years and order an epic head-to-toe workup with narcotics in high enough doses to kill Jumbo the Elephant. This happens almost every time a FF is being seen by a med student or new resident.

And, while you're at it, write your Congress people and tell them that ERs are DYING because of their stupid laws and King George's "they can always go to the ER." ERs are EMERGENCY ROOMS, NOT CLINICS.
