A lot of research is being devoted to determining plaque stability.
A company called Volcano has IVUS equipment which is being used to assess for vulnerable plaque. Not yet ready for prime time, but perhaps coming in the not too distant future.
But given the current state of healthcare economics I’m doubtful it will become standard of care for John Q Public.

I wonder about if cholesterol meds like Lipitor reduce plaque that already resides in the arteries, rather than just reducing LDLs in the blood?
